Cozy Winter Socks

As the weather gets colder, it’s time to break out the wool and the woolies.  I took a basic sock pattern and added a diagonal pattern for a bit of fun.  The yarn used is Lion Brand Sock-Ease and it is usually easy to find (I get mine from Michael’s).   One ball makes the pair, which is great so you don’t have to worry about matching up dye lots.

The pattern is set out below and I would rate it as an intermediate pattern but an easy sock pattern.  In other words, I don’t consider sock knitting a beginner project but, if you’ve successfully knitted a pair of socks before, this pair should cause you no problems.

These are knitted in the round on 5 double-pointed needles (size US 2) and for the gauge: 8 stitches equals 1″.  The pattern is for a woman’s regular calf and ladies’ size 8 foot.

Sock
Cast on 64 sts (16 on 4 needles).
Row 1:  Join to begin round and work in K1, P1 across all four needles.
Row 2-6:  Continue in K1, P1.

Diagonal Pattern
Row 1:  P1, yo, K3, ssk, K9, P1
Row 2:  P1, K1, yo, K3, ssk, K8, P1
Row 3:  P1, K2, yo, K3, ssk, K7, P1
Row 4:  P1, K3, yo, K3, ssk, K6, P1
Row 5:  P1, K4, yo, K3, ssk, K5, P1
Row 6:  P1, K5, yo, K3, ssk, K4, P1
Row 7:  P1, K6, yo, K3, ssk, K3, P1
Row 8:  P1, K7, yo, K3, ssk, K2, P1
Row 9:  P1, K8, yo, K3, ssk, K1, P1
Row 10:  P1, K9, yo, K3, ssk, P1

Repeat Rows 1-10 of Pattern 8 times or desired length of calf ending on Row 10 of Pattern.

Heel
Row 1:  On needles 1 and 2 Sl1, K1 across 32 stitches.
TURN leaving remaining stitches on other needles.
Row 2:  Sl1, P31

Repeat Rows 1 and 2 of Heel until you have worked Row 1 15 times and Row 2 14 times.

Turn Heel
Row 1:  Sl1, P18, P2tog, P1, TURN
Row 2:  Sl1, K7, ssk, K1, TURN
Row 3:  Sl1, P8, P2tog, P1, TURN

Continue on in this manner using the stitch before the gap as the first stitch of the ssk on even rows and the first stitch of P2tog in odd rows until you have 20 stitches remaining with the right side facing you.

Gusset
Place the last 10 stitches worked on one needle (will be needle 1) and with that needle pick up and knit 15 stitches down the side of the heel leaving you with 25 stitches on needle 1.  With needles 2 and 3 continue on in pattern.  With Needle 4, pick up and knit 15 stitches up side of heel and the 10 remaining stitches.  Work one round even (continuing pattern).

Row 1:  Knit to the last 3 stitches on needle 1.  K2tog, k1.  Knit needles 2 and 3 in pattern.  On Needle 4, K1, ssk, knit to end.
Row 2:  Knit

Repeat these two rows until there are 16 stitches on needles 1 and 4 (64 stitches total)

Continue on with pattern – knit needles 1 and 4, pattern needles 2 and 3 – until foot measures 2 1/2″ from desired length, ending with pattern Row 10.

Toe Decreases
K6, K2tog, repeat around row.  Knit 6 rows.
K5, K2tog, repeat around row.  Knit 5 rows.
K4, K2tog, repeat around row.  Knit 4 rows.
K3, K2tog, repeat around row.  Knit 3 rows.
K2, K2tog, repeat around row.  Knit 2 rows.
K1, K2tog, repeat around row.  Knit 1 row.
K2tog, repeat around row.

Break off yarn and close seam in Kitchener stitch.

Handmade - Just for You!

Last weekend I attended my first ever Christmas market to sell some of my handmade items. I have been very excited about this and started working on inventory months ago. As I have been telling my friends and family about the sale, all sorts of people have been asking me to make certain items for them. I am very flattered that my items are taking off and that people are buying them (and that I'm currently backlogged on orders!) but I have come to realize that I need to formulate a plan for future sales and craft fairs so that I'm not caught in a scramble the week before each sale to whip up some more items.  As part of getting organized, I am posting items and prices on this blog so that people can easily see the items I make and also what the pricing is.  Face Cloths These soft face cloths are made of durable 100% cotton and are machine washable.  They come in a variety of modern colours and have a loop for easy hanging.  $3 each or 2 for $5 Reusable Makeu

Sweet Baby Hat for Spring

When I found out my good friend had a baby girl, I couldn't wait to crochet a girly pink hat for her.  I ended up finding a pattern on Pinterest and adding on a little flower to make it a bit more feminine. Here is the pattern to the hat http://www.whistleandivy.com/2013/04/faux-ribbon-baby-hat.html .  I used Rowan handknit cotton yarn so had to adjust a bit for gauge but I really like the colours so made it work.  The pattern for the flower embellishment can be found at http://www.alittlebirdtoldme-craft.com/2010/10/crochet-flower-tutorial.html . Sophie's Universe has taken over my universe

It has been a long while since I blogged partially just because life is busy and partially because I have been crocheting like a fiend.    I have been a Ravelry member for a while but had only joined so that I could get access to free patterns.  Recently, I started adding project pages and joined some groups to help me out and provide support for a CAL that I joined in the spring.  Within the comments on that group, people kept mentioning "Sophie".  At first I just breezed over these comments but then I saw some pictures of the Sophies people were working on and I immediately fell in love.  Sophie's Universe was designed by Dedri Uys and she is nothing short of brilliant.  I cannot wrap my mind around how she came up with this design, let alone wrote a clear pattern for us to create her beautiful work of art for ourselves.  Everything you need to know to create a Sophie for yourself (or one of her other amazing designs) can be found on Dedri's amazing website
